Planted rooftop amenity terrace on a mass timber residential building

Sustainability

Sustainability, integrated design & the public interest.

Perspective & practice

Bridging ecological responsibility, client vision and community impact.

Sustainability in architecture is never an afterthought or an applied finish. It is a framework set during the very first site analysis and carried through every phase of project delivery.

At AB Architecture, integrated design brings together the client's functional and economic goals with broader environmental and public responsibilities. By evaluating energy performance, material lifecycle and massing early in the study stage, we improve performance before construction costs are locked in.

Balancing client vision with the public interest takes a collaborative, transparent approach. Whether we are designing a custom family home or a multi-family, mixed-use community, our integrated process aligns municipal bylaws, structural efficiency and community context into enduring spaces that serve both the people who use them and the public realm.

Our approach

Six commitments, applied from the first sketch.

  1. 01

    Site & passive design

Orientation, daylight, shading and natural ventilation are tested at the massing stage, before systems are sized.

  2. 02

    Low-carbon structure

Mass timber and other lower-carbon structural options are considered from the first sketch, when they are easiest to adopt.

  3. 03

    Energy performance

Envelopes and layouts are developed to meet BC Energy Step Code requirements and the performance targets set for each project.

  4. 04

    Certification

Working knowledge of LEED for projects pursuing third-party certification.

  5. 05

    Landscape & water

Green roofs, planted terraces and stormwater strategies integrated with the architecture rather than added later.

  6. 06

    Public realm

Active street frontages, plazas and shared amenity spaces that give something back to the neighbourhood.
